June Birthstones: Moonstone, Pearl & Alexandrite

June Birthstones: Moonstone, Pearl & Alexandrite

June is unique among the months of the year in that it is associated with not one, but three birthstones: Moonstone, Pearl and Alexandrite. Each possesses a distinct beauty and symbolism, offering a fascinating contrast between earth, sea and light.

Of the three, Moonstone has long been one of my personal favorites. Its soft glow, shifting luminosity and connection to intuition and transformation have captivated cultures throughout history and continue to inspire my work at the bench today.

MOONSTONE: A Stone of New Beginnings

Moonstone belongs to the feldspar family of minerals and is prized for its ethereal glow, a phenomenon known as adularescence. This luminous effect appears to move beneath the surface of the stone, creating the impression of moonlight captured within.

Throughout history, Moonstone has been associated with the moon and its cycles. Ancient Romans believed the stone was formed from solidified moonbeams, while in many Eastern traditions it was considered sacred and symbolic of balance, intuition and feminine energy.

The stone is reflective and reminds us that, just as the moon waxes and wanes, life moves through cycles of growth, reflection, change and renewal. For this reason, Moonstone has long been regarded as a symbol of inner clarity, hope and new beginnings.

Its quiet beauty is what continues to draw me to the stone. Rather than demanding attention, Moonstone reveals itself slowly through movement and light, rewarding a closer look. This luminous quality inspired my handcrafted triple Moonstone Statement Ring, where three glowing Moonstones are set in sterling silver to highlight the stone’s natural beauty and connection to light, balance and transformation. It has remained one of my Best Sellers and most popular designs for years.

PEARL: Beauty Born of the Sea

Unlike most gemstones, Pearls are not mined from the earth. They are formed within living mollusks, making them one of the most unique gemstones in the world.

For centuries Pearls have symbolized purity, wisdom and grace. They were treasured by royalty, worn during important ceremonies and passed through generations as symbols of elegance and refinement.

Their smooth surface and organic origin offer a striking contrast to the crystalline structure of most gemstones, reminding us that beauty can emerge through patience and time.

Though vastly different in appearance from Moonstone and Alexandrite, Pearls share a common thread with June’s other birthstones: each reflects transformation, growth and the beauty found in life’s natural cycles.

ALEXANDRITE: The Stone of Transformation

Among the rarest gemstones in the world, Alexandrite is celebrated for its extraordinary ability to change color under different lighting conditions. In daylight it often appears green to bluish-green, while under incandescent light it can shift to shades of red, violet or raspberry.

Discovered in nineteenth-century Russia, Alexandrite quickly became prized for both its rarity and its remarkable optical properties. Because of its dramatic transformation, it has become associated with adaptability, creativity and personal growth.

Few gemstones possess such a striking duality. Alexandrite reminds us that perspective can alter what we see, revealing different facets of beauty depending on the light in which it is viewed.

This remarkable quality is showcased in my Alexandrite Pendant, handcrafted in sterling silver and 14k gold. Like the gemstone itself, the piece reveals different qualities as it moves through changing light, making it a truly one-of-a-kind treasure.

A STONE OF LIGHT, CHANGE & POSSIBILITY

Although June offers three beautiful birthstones, I find myself continually drawn back to Moonstone. There is something captivating about a gemstone that reflects light rather than competing with it. Its glow is subtle, changing as it moves through the light, much like the cycles it has come to represent.

Whether chosen for its symbolism, its history or simply its beauty, Moonstone continues to inspire my work and remains one of my favorite gemstones to incorporate into handcrafted jewelry.

Like the month of June itself, Moonstone, Pearl and Alexandrite each remind us that change can be beautiful, growth is often cyclical, and every new season brings the possibility of transformation. ✧
